The Importance of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial
Decatur Public Library - Madden Auditorium
130 N Franklin, Decatur
Using quotes from Abraham Lincoln, Tim Townsend illustrates Lincoln’s view of slavery, his steadfast stand against its spread, and shows how Lincoln ultimately championed slavery’s demise. Quotes from political contemporaries of Lincoln’s, including Stephen A. Douglas, further illustrates that Lincoln’s stand was a courageous one, if not always politically wise. Townsend also shows that the view of Lincoln by abolitionists, such as Frederick Douglass, was complex and, while most were dissatisfied with Lincoln’s stance on slavery at the beginning the Lincoln presidency, they were his biggest allies by 1865. Townsend then brings the Lincoln story to the twentieth century by illustrating the interconnectedness between the Civil War and Civil Rights stories.
